Everybody must shop at Whole Foods
Well, not quite.
The LA City Counsel has decreed that for the next two years, at least, no new fast food joints shall be opened in a 32 square-mile area, that happens to be one of the poorer parts of LA. The reasoning is twofold, that there is little incentive to open healthier restaurants and supermarkets, and that there are the well known health risks associated with fast food.
I read The Omnivore’s Dilemma recently, so just one quick comment. The author noted that the high quality, local organic food that he favored was not available to everyone, and certainly not cost effective for everyone. He more specifically noted that fast food restaurants are one of the cheapest methods possible for getting necessary calories and sustenance, cheaper in some cases then preparing the food yourself. So beyond effectively saying to the residents of South LA “Fast food for me, but not for thee,” the LA City Counsel is also saying “Hey, you with little disposable income. Spend more of it on food.”
