Backlog

So I’m slowly working my way through my Tivo backlog, including a number of recordings from the pre-change era, before the election.

It is a little surreal to see the campaign ads now.

Also, thank woten it is over.

18 Hours

Yesterday, I rolled into the law school at sat down to work at 8:30.  I rolled out at 2:45.  This would not be noteworthy, accept that both were in the AM.  I spent around 18 hours working.

Not solid, of course.  You get a wee bit antsy sitting in the exact same chair, feeling it attempt to bind itself to you.  So I walked around a bit, got food, played a game of sudoku.  Nonetheless, that is a, if I do say so myself, a herculean effort.

But now, there is wet blanket of exhaustion wrapped around my headmeat.  Which is not good, given that I have miles to go before I sleep.  Well, miles to go while I sleep, since I’m leaving on a jet plane and I am congenitally unable to stay awake on an airplane.  And that is after doing some basic cleaning, packing, and attending a review session.

Viva Law School!

UPDATE:

This is getting posted a day later.  I didn’t have a chance to finish it, and when I finally touched head to pillow that night, I slept for 10 hours.  People who know me known that this is a truly unique experience, I get up between 6 and 6:30 every day, regardless of how little sleep or what I’ve been doing.

But back to work now.

Hmmm

Michele Malkin is advising the people upset over the passing of Prop. 8 that they lost, and they should “Move On.”

So, all the people who think that three cells have a souls should do the same in Colorado and South Dakota, right?  Shut up, sit down, and never raise the issue again?  Right?  And that whole Roe v. Wade thing, which keeps getting affirmed by them pesky judges, that should serve as a signal, correct?

Yes, They Would

I hate this right wing trope, that various complaints about Christianity wouldn’t happen if the Christian were replaced by Muslims.  It is both intellectually lazy and dishonest.

First, really?  Prove it.  The fact is that American Islam doesn’t have a tenth, a hundredth, of the authority, money, and stature of Christianity in all it’s various forms.  And, with regards to this specific issue, it didn’t have a tenth of the effect on the election and California’s Proposition 8.  Maybe, had Islamic organizations had the effect on Prop. 8 that Catholics and the LDS did, and I don’t mean proportionally, they would be getting protested.  But they didn’t, so it is a moot issue.

Second, the trope essentially boils down to “Our bigotry is less then their bigotry, and you aren’t protesting their bigotry.  Why won’t you let us get away with it?”  Conservatives, ostensibly, are all about personal responsibility.  But here, they abdicate it all and try to shift blame and focus onto another group of fundamentalists.  Various centrally controlled, hierarchical, religions engaged in an organized effort to effect the political process.  Deal with the blowback.

Note to Bob Schaeffer

Listen Bob. I wasn’t inclined to vote for you, and I in fact did not vote for you.

But polluting my daily commute with dozens of illegally placed signs does not endear you to any one at all.

Voting

I got up, walked across the street, and exercised my franchise today.  Yes, my polling place was conveniently located.

According to this, I now have the right to grouse all I like.

An Election Eve Thought

There is a whole genre of books that I like to refer to as “Everything you know is wrong books.”  They are books who’s overarching thesis is, obviously, “everything you know about [insert subject] is wrong.”  Maybe it is that China discovered America, or that it was really an Italian who invented the radio, or Alexander Hamilton wasn’t extremely leery of democracy, or any other thing.  Sometimes these books have relevant and well-sourced basis, more often these books are extrapolated from some small thing.  So you have to take them with a grain of salt and use a discerning eye to figure out what is well researched and what is excited ranting.

And the increasing claims of rightward blogs that the election is really as close as all the polls say it is sound just the same.  Considering that it is looking pretty darn tough for him to win.

Just saying.
